Over the weekend, nature treated us to a mesmerizing display of the Northern Lights, visible from many more places than usual. This natural wonder reminds us that, when conditions are right and diverse elements interact, extraordinary results can occur. Did you get to see them?
I was lucky enough to experience it right outside my home and I was in awe with the variety of colours in the night sky. I learned that green hues dominate, stemming from oxygen molecules colliding with solar particles at altitudes between 100 and 250 kilometers. Red hues, only visible during intense geomagnetic storms, result from interactions with nitrogen at higher altitudes of around 200 kilometers. Purple hues, occurring alongside blue, involve a combination of nitrogen and hydrogen and typically occur at lower altitudes, often below 100 kilometers above the Earth's surface.
